Breathing for Health: Rediscovering the Power of Your Breath
This may sound like an odd question, but how well do you breathe? Breathing is a fundamental, automatic process that occurs every second of every day, often without our conscious awareness. However, many people find that they aren’t breathing properly, which can lead to increased tension in the body and affect their overall health.
The Importance of Proper Breathing
In my work with hypnotherapy clients, I have observed that it often takes some time for their breathing to synchronise with their bodies. This misalignment can worsen physical and emotional stress and good breathing is crucial for not only for relaxation but also for maintaining a balanced and healthy body.
Breathing to Help Anxiety
Anxiety is a response to certain triggers or situations that cause feelings of fear and lead to physical sensations such as heart palpitations, sweating, and a having sense of panic. Breathing is key helping you to return to a state of calm and by consciously controlling our breath, we can mitigate these physical responses and reduce anxiety.
The Muscle Memory of Breathing
Our bodies remember how we breathe, and this muscle memory can either support or hinder our ability to relax. When we practice breathing techniques we are able to train our muscles to support a calm and balanced state and make it easier to manage stress and anxiety.
Simple Breathing Techniques
There are numerous breathing techniques that can help you regain control and promote relaxation and here we will focus on one simple method that you can use anytime you need to calm yourself. This technique helps you to regulate your breath and you can quickly become relaxed and it will help to manage anxiety.
The 4-7-8 Breathing Technique
- Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.
- Take a deep breath in through your nose for a count of 4.
- Hold your breath for a count of 7.
- Exhale through your mouth for a count of 8.
- Repeat this for, four times to start and gradually increase the number of cycles as you become more comfortable with the technique.
Rediscover the power of your breath and take a step towards better health and well-being. Proper breathing can transform your physical and emotional state, helping you lead a more balanced and peaceful life.
